Types of Rodents in New York and the Tri-State

There are four main rodent species in the tri-state area. Each one looks different and has different physical and behavioral characteristics:

Norway Rats

The most common type of rat in New York is the Norway rat. Also known as the “brown rat” or more commonly the “sewer rat,” these rodents are characterized by their flat snout, small ears, and long pink tails. They are typically about 16-20” long, weigh around one pound, and have brown or gray fur. When you see a rat in New York, it’s usually a Norway rat.

Roof Rats (Black Rats)

These used to be more common in New York but have been mostly wiped out by the more aggressive brown rat population. Roof rats run smaller in size, typically 5-7” long and weighing between 2-8 ounces. They’re great at climbing and jumping, and they prefer to live well above the ground – hence the “roof rat” nickname.

Deer Mice

They’re also called field mice, are heartier and prefer to live outside. They live in fields and forests and can survive winter’s colder temperatures. Identify deer mice by their gray or reddish-brown bodies and white bellies. They often have white feet as well.

House Mice

The most common mouse in New York. They are smaller than deer mice with rounded ears and uniform body color – usually gray, black, or brown without a white belly. Their tails are long, thin, and hairless.

Known for wreaking havoc on property and products, and for spreading disease-causing pathogens, mice can severely harm your business. Protect your brand reputation and financial health by implementing these preventative measures to minimize the risk of costly pest disruptions.

Signs of a Rodent Infestation

Rats and mice prefer quiet, undisturbed areas such as storage rooms, utility closets, drop ceilings, maintenance rooms, and delivery areas. Rodents often stay hidden, but leave behind evidence of their presence. Some of the most common warning signs include:

  • Small, dark droppings found in cupboards, janitorial closets, under sinks, or near stored food in break rooms and commercial kitchens
  • Urine stains or sharp ammonia-like odors in back rooms, storage areas, or under equipment
  • Gnaw marks on baseboards, electrical wiring, server cables, packaging, or stock in storerooms and loading areas
  • Shredded paper, insulation, or fabric tucked behind filing cabinets, under machinery, inside wall voids, or in patient supply closets
  • Scratching or squeaking noises coming from walls, ceilings, or floors
  • Torn or damaged food packaging
  • Smudge or grease marks on walls and floors where rodents travel
  • Strong, musty smells that may indicate hidden nests or deceased rodents

Rodents multiply quickly and spread illnesses through droppings, urine, or even a bite, so early detection is crucial for commercial industries.

Schedule a rodent control inspection for fast, efficient removal if you notice any signs of activity. DIY solutions may only provide short-term relief, while a professional rodent control program can locate the root cause and deliver a more reliable result.

How to Prevent Rodent Infestations

Making your property less appealing to rats and mice can help reduce the chance of infestation. To do this, you should:

  • Keep food and garbage sealed to remove potential food sources.
  • Clean spills quickly to avoid attracting pests.
  • Declutter storage spaces to remove hiding spots.
  • Schedule regular rodent control inspections to identify risks early.

Commercial businesses, healthcare facilities, and academic institutions should pay close attention to loading docks, communal kitchens, utility and storage areas in their buildings. Rodents can easily slip in during deliveries, so train staff to recognize early signs of infestation.

You should maintain tight sanitation schedules and detailed logs. Coordinated cleaning and waste management programs limit opportunities for rodents to establish colonies.

Routine outdoor maintenance is also helpful. Trim vegetation, remove yard debris, and ensure dumpsters and waste containers have secure lids.

Another contributing factor to rodent infestations is water. They need hydration as much as food, so repair leaky pipes, dripping faucets, or standing water around your property.

Rodent Exclusion

Blocking, or excluding, rodent access is an effective prevention tactic; so much so that professional technicians use it as part of their integrated pest management strategy. Exclusion focuses on sealing common entry points such as:

  • Window and door frames
  • Baseboards
  • Roofing and tile gaps
  • Utility line connections
  • Foundation cracks

Because rodents can squeeze through the smallest openings, these gaps should be secured with professional-grade materials. Our rodent exclusion services use long-lasting solutions like Flexi Armor and stainless-steel mesh that rodents can't chew through. These materials help to block hidden or hard-to-reach access points throughout your building.

In addition to sealing structural gaps, effective exclusion involves:

  • Installing door sweeps and weather stripping to close gaps under exterior doors.
  • Adding mesh covers to vents and utility openings to maintain air flow but block rodent access.
  • Reinforcing vulnerable areas with metal or concrete, since rodents can easily gnaw through softer materials.
  • Conducting follow-up inspections to ensure that no new access points have developed over time.

Exclusion is an ongoing process. As buildings settle and weather changes, new openings can appear. However, a combination of exclusion and regular rodent control inspections will ensure your property remains secure.

When rats move inside a business, they can create problems that put your reputation on the line. Their presence can pose potential health and food safety threats, which could result in public health or regulatory action. They can also cause costly damage to equipment and structures. Help prevent these costly disruptions with these tips from our experts.

Other Rodent Control Tips

Even the cleanest kitchens, offices, and entryways can experience infestations because rodents are both opportunistic and resourceful. They take advantage of overlooked food crumbs, unsecured trash, and clutter that provides shelter. Minor hygiene oversights can attract rodents and may violate safety standards, putting staff, customers, and revenue at risk. That’s why sanitation and ongoing maintenance should be central to any rodent control program. Professional pest control experts can handle this for you, but you can also reduce attractants by:

  • Conducting regular staff training to ensure teams understand how daily habits and hygiene impact rodent risk
  • Scheduling routine maintenance checks to identify and address structural vulnerabilities
  • Improving storage practices, like keeping stock off the floor and food items in sealed, rodent-proof containers
  • Monitoring high-risk zones, such as loading docks, break rooms, waste disposal areas, and mechanical rooms
  • Using professional monitoring tools like bait stations and tamper-resistant traps to detect early activity
  • Documenting and tracking any signs of rodent activity to support ongoing prevention and compliance efforts

But remember, while these measures can help, they may not provide long-term protection. Hospitals, food manufacturers, property managers, and local government must maintain public buildings to safeguard local communities. Failure to comply with national and state health codes can have serious consequences for owners, managers, and local authorities. To limit risks and meet compliance standards, it’s best to work with professional rodent control providers who understand the habits of rats and mice in urban and commercial environments.

Frequently Asked Questions on Rodent Control

The most effective method combines sanitation, exclusion, and professional treatments. Traps and baits will help, but a comprehensive, structured program provides long-term results.

DIY solutions may reduce rodent numbers but won’t stop them from breeding or prevent future activity. A professional pest control expert will locate entry points and nesting sites, and create a customized plan to remove, exclude, and prevent repeat infestations.

Routine inspections, sealing entry points, and regular cleaning go a long way. Keeping records and effective sanitation programs are especially important for compliance. Working with a professional service means you’ll get tailored advice, plus monitoring to ensure rodents don’t return.

Exclusion is an integral part of our rodent control services. Our team identifies gaps and seals them with durable materials rodents can’t chew through. We continue to monitor the situation to keep exclusion barriers intact and seal new gaps, if any appear.

Our technicians are trained to apply treatments carefully and responsibly. We use targeted methods and advise property owners on safety practices, so families, pets, and staff remain protected throughout the process.

The timeline depends on the infestation size and property type. Smaller infestations may be controlled in a few visits, while larger or complex issues may require ongoing service. Our programs include follow-up inspections to confirm effectiveness and prevent re-infestation.
